Importance of Holistic Development

Early years practitioners should be working towards all areas of learning and
development (Physical, Emotional, Social, Communication and Language,
Literacy and maths). This concept is known as holistic teaching, where a child is
looked as a whole person not divided in areas.
They need to understand that all area has interdependency. If a child is behind in
one area it can affect other areas too. Such as a shy child in a setting is less likely
to talk to other children, therefore less likely to have friends. This can directly
affect child’s communication and language development. As famous child theorist
Vygotsky suggested, children learn skills or gain knowledge through social
interactions. Shy children will loose that opportunity if practitioners won’t
intervene timely.
